Lack of interest may be a sign of stress
Lack of interest and distraction may well be signs of distress in that situation. You may not be aware of avoiding it?
Stress is the body's way of reacting to a possible threat. How do we react to threats?
There are several reactions to stress:
- fight
- - Flight
- freeze
This time I will concentrate on the second way of reaction to fear. Avoidance may seem to be just laziness and shunning away from work - although it may be part of it - but also a sign of stress. If we cannot defend ourselves with fight, we flee. That's the next step.
When at work, or just in normal every day life, we can't just take off and leave the scene to avoid annoying questions, situations and decisions, can we? Often time they stick to our mind and bother tremendously, maybe for the rest of our lives? So they don't just disappear. Long term decisions are not recommended under stress, although one may feel capable of doing it. All the unfinished business or issues grow in size day by day, week by week, and month by month.
You can flee in many ways
There are many ways of fleeing, some of the common ways are:
- isolating yourself
- avoidance
- restlessness
- fumbling
- emotional eating, snacking
- wanting to leave
Unpleasant situations in life
We can't avoid difficult choices, conversations and/ situations in life, that you would rather pass. Stress is part of life, the question is how do you cope with it and/ deal with it? What are your coping mechanisms to get by?
Whether we like it or not, our experiences affect on to how we relate to challenges and decisions.
- How do you choose your company?
- What kind of food are you attracted to?
- How do you choose your profession?
- What kind of clothes do you like to wear, and what color seems to fit you better than the other?
The first experiences in life are often the ground for the future choices. We form a perception of any given situation, and choices based on our first experiences. If for example you have heart yourself badly as a kid when you were running fast on asphalt, the more you heart yourself then, the better you know to avoid it the next time on asphalt - maybe never run on asphalt again, at least not that fast?
Other people's reactions have an affect
Other people's reactions effect a lot on how dangerous we see and feel the situation. If you hurt yourself after running on asphalt and your parents scold you for being so reckless or how dangerous the asphalt is, you may get the experience that 'you're reckless', 'asphalt roads are dangerous' or that 'running is dangerous'. Now that you are grown-up, how much would you fear running? Do you run on asphalt roads? Do you think that you're reckless, a duffer?
This analog is very mundane but still describes well how we make choices later on in life. Based on the early childhood experiences we form many beliefs that were downloaded into the subconscious mind.
Early childhood experiences
We all have memories from the school years that may not necessary inspire learning new things or enhance co-operation - not to mention public speaking. If the memory was stressful the brain doesn't work optimally when thinking about it. The more negative the experience is, the more likely it's stored into the memory of the subconscious mind - to be avoided later on in life.
The connections don't work optimally which is why the mind is not clear or the creative abilities don't blossom. The reaction is just different. In order to change it it's best to go back to the original situation that caused it. We don't always know consciously what was the causative factor, but we can change the reaction to it. The subconscious mind takes care of it very well, and much better than we can do consciously. There are many ways of doing it. Especially the stage fright/public speaking which is one of the most common fears world wide, help is available. Most commonly they help to relate to it in a different way. They also teach to relate to public speaking with new tools.Childhood fears do effect on later decisions, for example career choices. If you have unpleasant memories from school time, maybe it's good to get rid of them? What ever the method, if it works, it works.
What kind of memories do you have from school years? Is learning, reading, sitting in the class room or other people's company a pleasant or annoying idea?
